Wheelchairs and lifts
Manual wheelchairs and rollators (wheeled walking aids with a seat) are available to borrow free of charge on a first come, first served basis for the duration of a visit. Mobility aids are wiped down before use and cleaned on return. Mobility scooters can be used in the Palace grounds, and are permitted in the Palace providing they can fit in the lift – the lift measures 130cm in width x 125cm in depth, the door width is 89cm and there is a weight limit of 800kg.
Access
There are 27 steps in the Great Staircase. If you require step-free access please speak to a Warden.
There is no wheelchair access to Mary, Queen of Scots’ Chambers, which are accessed via a steep spiral staircase consisting of 25 steps. Film and audio content on Mary Queen of Scots can be found on the multimedia guide.
Flooring and Surfaces
The floors inside the State Apartments are either wooden or carpeted with thick pile carpet.
The floor in Holyrood Abbey has gravel chippings.
As the Palace is an historic building, the floors may be uneven so please take care.
Respite seating
Benches are available in the Throne Room and the Great Gallery. The Café at the Palace is located in the Mews Courtyard.
Assistance animals
Assistance animals are welcome. We recommend that if possible animals wear a jacket or lead slip to identify them as working.
Staff reserve the right to ask visitors to remove their animal if it is deemed not to be behaving appropriately. Arrangements will then be made for the visitor to return without their animal. Please contact [email protected] for more information.
Shops
The shop is located opposite the Café and next to the entrance to The King’s Gallery. The shop is on one level with wooden flooring. There is a one-way route in operation through the shop and capacity will be limited. There is a hand sanitiser station at the entrance point and the shop is operating cashless.
Toilets
Accessible toilets are located in the Café. Once you have purchased a ticket there are further toilets in the Mews Courtyard.
Parking and transport
The nearest disabled parking bays are located on Horse Wynd, just outside the Palace. For further information please see map & directions.
